So yesterday I handed in my ISTD submission, all went okay I suppose bar a few mishaps BUT I am proud of what I have achieved and pictures to come this weekend!!!! (That’s a promise).
Today, has been a chill out and do Promotion and Employability day, where I updated my sketchbook with a lecture, and annotated Monday’s business card designs. Now I have made new ones, following advise from one of my lecturers.
I’ve used the same card stock as before, but off white and cream paper stocks on either side. (This time I decided to use Spray mount, so much easier and less sticky on the edges too! My house mate / course mate can eat his words!!! muahahhahah!).
Well here are the photos of the new and improved business cards for my unit.
You may notice that these look really different, that’s because I scrapped the full block colour designs and left it simple with the double J speaking. The colours are very muted though, so I might need to test other paper stocks if I have time, but next I can choose my preferred card out of these (Maybe one of each) and then start doing everything else I need to do!!!
Yesterday, was the start of lectures and my first two units. Both have set assignments, and certain time lengths.
The first, is a unit named ‘Developing Design Practice’ which is a six week unit, where at the end of it I will have a handmade / designed book. Even though the course work seems heavy, I feel this will be an enjoyable unit and one that I have been looking forward to since the end of the last academic year.
The second unit, is an option that I chose at the end of my first year, ‘Professional Practice : Live Design Briefs’ this entails a selection of assigned briefs for clients. The first, is for a company called ‘Fenner Paper’ who supply 100% recycled papers. The task is to design a poster, in 7 weeks, convincing the people about the power of the poster. This is going to be interesting, as it’s fully open to what ever I (And my course mates) want to do. We can either work individually, or in teams of 2.
I know for a fact, that this unit will run over the whole year, AND we (as in myself and my course mates) will be participating in the YCN awards, with a choice of many live briefs from them.
I believe that this year is going to challenge me in ways, that I had never thought of before. I can’t wait to see what I can come up with.
So I started my Course properly this week, it feels so good to be doing something with my life now, rather than sitting about waiting for things to happen. I love it here in Portsmouth, I have made some friends which I spent time with during the last week. This week I joined the Circus Skills Society and they are all lovely and really fun to be with. I honestly think I have made the best decision I could ever make in life by coming to university. The people on my course are also lovely. We all have creative minds which we can bounce off of when things get a bit more fun or busy. I am currently doing a project on Stephan Sagmeister which I found out Monday. I got really excited as one of my lecturers from college touched on him a few times in lessons. It is group work, but we have to do our own research individually too as well as in teams and produce a 5 minute interactive PDF presentation in six weeks time.
I am much better at taking notes than I used to be when I started college also. I used to be really bad at it, even though I did take loads of notes I got better which has been really useful during this past week at uni. I do miss home, and everything there including the horses I’m used to working with and my friends, but this is an opportunity that I cannot miss.
I am truly where I belong at this point in my life.
