Since my last post I have had so many interviews that my confidence has rocked sky high… however none have been successful; It’s starting to feel like false hope. It’s a tough world out there, but I am still moving forward and trying my best.
Recently I went to Samfest, a local music festival in Tongham. Normally I go with my friends, but this year was different! I went with my aunty, uncle and little cousins!!!
I stayed till the end amongst the crowd and of course the rain. It was good to see some familiar faces one of the bar men and one of the organisers.
The acts were great, my favourite though was The Flying Wright Bros. always a pleasure to see them perform rock and classic rock acts!
I took my poi with me, where I had lots of space to play. Having not spun in a while it was definitely hard work but the people loved it all the same!!! (The bar man knows me for my tankard and poi skills at a different event). A guy with a camera also enjoyed filming my antics, it was a good day out and all for charity too!
I am still trying to come up with some ideas for side projects, so far I have thought about:
> Designing album covers with self generated imagery, picking out random words from a dictionary / online generator / news articles / books etc. for the band name and album name
> Designing tiki style prints
> Designing a Zine about something or rather
(100 days… I have given up because I have creative bloq and can’t seem to think of anything good to make into an animated gif)
Today’s progress has been a lot faster in terms of knowing what and where my content should go (this is only the landing page so far.. I have many more pages to create, but for now… apart from some very obvious images… and possibly copy….) I am almost ready to design the next media query for tablets!
Christmas and 2016 are over…..
2017 has started and honestly, it looks to be a busy few months at OMM.
But before the excitement of this year starts, I had a really quiet christmas and new year, but it wasn’t without a wonderful trip to Portsmouth to see my favourite person, and his family. It was a lovely weekend!
But on the lead up to christmas, I had designed a few christmas cards that I gave out this year, once I got them printed (using an a4 inkjet printer… a4 paper, blue tac and some Rymans own 6 x 6″ (15 x 15 cm) cards). I unfortunately ran out of time to emboss them with a newly acquired embossing kit from Lidl, not too long ago. BUT there’s always next Christmas!
Also, following these I designed a Christmas message to place on my instagram for social media, using the snow man from one of the christmas card designs.
My first month at OMM, has gone quickly but well. I’ve learnt a lot, and got back into the swing of designing which is great! My colleagues are lovely and have been super welcoming. Not to mention the occasional cake and mince pies around at the office, so far. I’ve mostly been drinking LOTS of tea nowadays… Coffee is still my go to thing, but Tea gets me through the day quite nicely. And of course the occasional beer / cider on a Friday… after 5pm. (Yes.. you heard that right… we’re allowed to drink after 5pm on Fridays at the work place)
We had our Christmas party on Thursday… Ascot Racecourse… lots of drinks, the food was delicious and everyone looked incredible! We are a good looking bunch, I must say!
Apart from work, I have been thinking about designing my own Christmas cards this year, I have the sketches… now I need to not procrastinate and design them!
Of course Christmas is approaching quite quickly… the shopping for gifts has begun… each week I’m trying to get something without hitting the high streets! (But I think, at some point I must….)
I keep thinking back, that many months ago I was finishing up all my work for Uni… now I’m a Junior Designer at an Agency! I could not be happier.
Next year… I learn to drive!
Since my last poster designs, I have had two interviews and one I’m currently waiting to see if I have been successful or not.
My fingers and toes are crossed, I’m anxious and well, excited to know.
Working as a supervisor has been interesting and I am actually enjoying this new position, but it is tiring which is why I haven’t had much room for any recent designs apart from one amazing project, which has just finished.
I’ve been designing wedding invitations for my Uncle and Aunty to be, I’ve seen a photo of the invites, printed in all their glory and I can’t be more proud of the achievement and helping craft their special day next year. I’m not going to reveal the designs just yet, other wise a lot of people will loose out on this spectacular surprise!
So for now, I’m planning my next design spectacle (well…. trying to think of ideas…).
Sharing two weeks of my poster challenge! I have posted these on my instagram, but as this is my design blog, it made sense to post them here as well!
Week 1: ‘The Boys of Summer’
Influenced from The Ataris cover of this awesome song! I decided to use a gradient of orange and yellow, at a low opacity and a lettering typeface for the display. I wanted it to be simple, subtle and as summery as possible. (Also, rather calm and lazy… summer time is an interesting part of the year)
Week 2: ‘Offset’
I like offsets, I used one in my logo. I like how they create different colours and play with your vision. Helvetica Nue was the best choice, because it’s clean, geometric and I haven’t used it at all in a long time.
The Graduate show, on Friday evening, was great! I spoke to many people, including the Lord Mayor of Portsmouth, he was a lovely man very interested in what we do in the Graphic Design Basement Studios, also spoke to many visitors, had long conversations about Adrian Frutiger and my work / others work. Really enjoyed the evening and was honoured to exhibit with my peers and friends.
The day before, I purchased a screen printing set, from the art store….and this gave me ideas to start making prints… GOOD prints… for personal projects, while applying for a career in Graphic Design. The aim of the game, (I’ve had this inclination for a while, but never got round to starting) is to sell these prints on. Perhaps at events such as Comic Con, Waterways / Craft festivals and see how and where it gets me.
I think I might start small and get into the Free Art Friday community, perhaps even document my adventures / progress on my new found Instagram account, Twitter and on this blog as well.
I’ve had an idea as a starting point. The nursary rhyme, ‘One for Sorrow’ about the superstitions around Magpies. It’s got so many versions and I want to do them all!!! Perhaps even to start off with, to practice hand lettering, screen printing and on screen. The reason is, since I heard the rhyme and Band of Skulls: Patterns, the rhyme has had a bit of an impact on me. I’m not majorly superstitious, other than Fate, Destiny and everything happens for a reason, ghosts / kindred spirits kind of thing. (Still… not majorly, but enough to be open minded).
Updates on progress to come soon!
