Eco Trumps – Ethical Design

Ethical Design was a real eye opener in my practice. I learnt so much about how Graphic Design can be sustainable, and how I can use that into my practice. One of my influences was David Burman, and his book ‘Do Good Design’.
In terms of the set brief, I had to write my own proposal. The first of which was about books and reading. I travelled away from that and decided to make a pocket guide for young designers of 16 – 25 +. This took the form of playing cards, or at least Trump cards.
If I had more time, I would have screen printed the backs of them, as I had a few mishaps with double sided printing. I would have also used a laser cutting machine to cut the cards out and have nice neat corners as well as sourcing my own sustainable card stock.
However, I wanted to make somethign fun and educational, perhaps something I would use my self. I used Ryman Eco, which is a free downloadable font that is eco friendly and uses less ink than the majority of other fonts.
The one other thing, I had to design was a display poster show casing my work and with a 500 word statement.

2014 has ended, and 2015 has started off with a bang…. well… I say a bang….

I have celebrated my best friends 20th, my boyfriends 21st and wow… I suppose christmas and new year too. I got some groovy gifts, as per usual!

I have been tremendously busy. My last unit, Screen Design: Information Design was really stressful. I haven’t had a chance to upload the screen shots yet, but once I find them again I will upload for the world to see (I am proud of it, regardless of the bugs in the code).

I have also started a new project, Ethical Design which involves me choosing my own field of study based around a concern or issue that could be fixed or have more awareness. BUT for Tuesday I have had to make a postcard based around my proposal.

This is my design: I based it around the PUFFIN and PENGUIN books. I kept it simple and used a grid system on the main text, on the back (yes it is double sided).

So, I have done a survey and hopefully that will give me some more ideas to work with. Busy times, but I am getting there. Nothing like learning and doing something I am passionate about.
