8th April 2017, marked the day my Uncle Duncan married the love of his life, a lovely lady called Jennie.
Summer 2016, I offered to put together their wedding invitations, which also included a Save the Date video, a short animation using a Wacom Intuos 3 tablet and Adobe Photoshop. You can see the video here: https://vimeo.com/177128953
Following on with the story and natural scene, I continued this style for the invitations. Albeit a little cleaner and much more refined. Little did I know, that I also would be asked to put together the order of service cover, the table labels, a handmade sign for the photobooth AND at the very last minute, the seating plan.
All of this, was worth it! I would not have had it any other way, to be part of something wonderful, beautiful and amazing. All in all, definitely would love to do something like this again! To be part of a wedding not just as a guest but also as a key asset in ensuring everything looks great was the most incredible feeling I can never express through words. The compliments that followed were humbling, to know a wide audience who came to experience the joining of two people, loved the design and allowed the day to be even more special. The transformation of a section of my design, was put onto a well crafted wooden sign, which I thought was absolutely stunning. The craftsmanship and the feeling I experienced with seeing that, I cannot express in words.
An awful lot has happened since my last post …
My website now looks like this:
A cleaner one page scroll, and hopefully some nice pages for my work to come soon!
The weekend just gone was incredible, not just for the weather but for the biggest event of the year so far.
My uncle’s wedding!
I had lots of last minute assets to design and deliver on time as well as helping make some willow hearts and shortbread biscuits for the big day. All of the photos to come soon! Everyone loved the invitations I designed as well as the printed materials around the reception. To have made a good impression on so many people through design, on my uncle’s big day was a really lovely thing for me to experience, to have contributed to this along with so many others, was a wonderful feeling.
I’m also applying my skills to a couple of freelance opportunities for two local businesses, while I hunt for my next career opportunity in Graphic Design.
So until next time, I will be finishing and launching my website again very soon, creating a best of video of the wedding AND who knows.. maybe some luck is on the way?
Today’s progress has been a lot faster in terms of knowing what and where my content should go (this is only the landing page so far.. I have many more pages to create, but for now… apart from some very obvious images… and possibly copy….) I am almost ready to design the next media query for tablets!
Recently I have been taking my camera out on walks (2 to be exact so far).
The goal is to practice my photography and to learn to use my Canon EOS 1200D camera, which is over a year old now since purchase.
It’s an absolutely lovely camera, light weight and lovely to hold. It’s honestly one of the best things I have purchased in my student years.
I wanted to share with you my favourite photographs so far:
The surroundings where I live, are wonderful and the canal is one of my favourite places!
More walks to come and hopefully more photographs to appear soon!
A lot has happened this month.
My driving lessons are going well, I really enjoy the freedom that comes with sitting behind the wheel and talking to my instructor.
However, my time at OMM ran short. And now, I have been working on re-designing my logo just check out my Instagram to see the process. So far, with the new identity my CV and portfolio taster have both been updated, AND some brand new shiny business cards are arriving, from MOO very soon.
Next on my list, is to re-print my portfolio. I’m thinking of getting it printed into a book / magazine from Blurb… they’re really reasonable. (A swatch pack is on it’s way with paper samples). But I will be putting it together ready to get printed. Then, while I’m waiting for that, my website will definitely be updated.
I know I’m supposed to be saving my pennies with all this, but hopefully if I can invest in my self, I can progress in my career sooner than later.
Hopefully things will look up.
Alrighty, since my last post, January is at it’s end and February is just about to begin.
Now I know what you’re all thinking….. where the hell did January go?
For me, working at OMM has had it’s ups and downs, but it’s still experience and I’m not going to waste this opportunity. Recently I have been working on yet another Squarespace built website.. having finished OMM Photography, just in the first week handing it over, to my colleagues. Then… came the matter of producing a Van wrap which gave out mixed reactions.
However… I have recently joined a gym, and have been going for a number of 5 days now. I actually enjoy it… surprisingly. It wakes me up for the afternoon and my productivity does become a little more productive. And I feel better inside, with just sitting on my arse all day.
The other thing, outside of work is, I have started to learn to drive …. Uh-OH!
Yep… I’ll be on the road quicker than one may think… hopefully
My first month at OMM, has gone quickly but well. I’ve learnt a lot, and got back into the swing of designing which is great! My colleagues are lovely and have been super welcoming. Not to mention the occasional cake and mince pies around at the office, so far. I’ve mostly been drinking LOTS of tea nowadays… Coffee is still my go to thing, but Tea gets me through the day quite nicely. And of course the occasional beer / cider on a Friday… after 5pm. (Yes.. you heard that right… we’re allowed to drink after 5pm on Fridays at the work place)
We had our Christmas party on Thursday… Ascot Racecourse… lots of drinks, the food was delicious and everyone looked incredible! We are a good looking bunch, I must say!
Apart from work, I have been thinking about designing my own Christmas cards this year, I have the sketches… now I need to not procrastinate and design them!
Of course Christmas is approaching quite quickly… the shopping for gifts has begun… each week I’m trying to get something without hitting the high streets! (But I think, at some point I must….)
I keep thinking back, that many months ago I was finishing up all my work for Uni… now I’m a Junior Designer at an Agency! I could not be happier.
Next year… I learn to drive!
Following on from my last ‘Update’ post…
I’ve received an offer…
I have accepted!
Soon I will finally kick-start my career as a Junior Designer, after three months of hunting and applications I am feeling relieved, excited and… maybe a little terrified (but that will diminish before long).
To say the least I am looking forward to it greatly, and I will continue to grow and learn as well as to aspire in my own skills.
Still, keeping up with my own personal projects along the side, hoping to continue on with the Magpie series of posters, maybe turn them into other things such as stationary, cases, maybe even diary covers. The potential here is ambitious and maybe I could improve them enough to become more than what they are. A transformation one might say.
Well, let’s see in due course!
Carrying on with the posters, I have two more designs which I’m quite happy with.
The first, from week 5
This was influenced by the simple shape of the triangle and how it can be used with colour, texture and layering. It may look like different things to many eyes, such as a rewind button or fast forward. I didn’t see this when I designed it, I only saw the simplicity of triangles, kind of like Pythagoras in the BBC’s Atlantis series. The colours reflect my own personal branding.
I was ill this week, and by the weekend I had no ideas or any inspiration to design a poster. Bad I know, but I think I needed the rest and time to think.
Week 7, I thought about how I could incorporate this geometric theme I have, and make something even more interesting. This time I played with circles, their size, and using gradients to produce a harmonising contrast. It surprisingly turned out quite Space Age, I thought about adding some typography like in the NASA posters, but I couldn’t think of anything to put, so I left it to the imagination.
