Tuesday and Wednesday Messy Fun Time

Here’s an update on my Major Project:

I found a tutorial online, which shows you how to design and paint your own rustic wooden signs. So, I bought some plywood to test this out by using Acrylic paints and Carbon Paper to transfer the lettering onto the material.

Both of these were featured prototypes on Thursday (Both also failed to communicate my topic which is The Obscure Nautical Phrases / Sayings in our language as everyone who looked at this, thought it was about sign writing or sign painting.)

Oh well…. more ideas to come soon!

Other uni projects are also going well, I’ve had a set back on my Promotion unit where a lecturer called my last logo designs ‘Dumpy’ so I’ve been working hard to make them less so. Digital versions to be made this weekend. ISTD (International Society of Typographic Deisgners) is also pressing forward, I now need to add content to my book about Adrian Frutiger and continue adding the ‘Wow’ factor to my format (which is a circle!)

‘Going Round in Circles’

For the past three months, I have been working tirelessly on a 4000 word report, that explores the evocative natures of Vinyl Records and how they create an experience for the listener. This was intensive and a lot of research was needed to compile into a report and a visual response. The aim originally was to look at album covers, and how they have created an experience but with much discussion and self directed study, it became to looking at the records and the covers as a whole, in how and why they are evocative and culturally popular. This was enlightening and really interesting to read up on, seeing as how vinyl records are now becoming popular again. They’re a old format, but new to the generations today.

I am extremely pleased with my outcome, a 12″ x 12″ book titled ‘Going Round in Circles’, which includes self produced photography, letterpress, interview and quotes from my research. I have also included a mini 7″ x 7″ book, featuring my interview with one of my course mates, and friend, Dan Bass. Another feature to this book as a double sided A2 poster, with letterpress type expressing a word visually, with the images.

I want to share this outcome to show how proud I am, of what I have managed to achieve in three months!!!

Preparations & Freelancing

I haven’t really done an update in a while, so here’s what’s been happening this summer!

I have been dabbling in hand written typography, maybe not to a great standard but I will hopefully, with practice get better and more precise with my lettering. It’s actually quite enjoyable to do something different, which I hope to continue into the future.

I have also been preparing for the YCN Awards Ceremony, where I will be picking up my award as a winner in the competition. I am really excited as this is my first major design competition, and to win it as a 2nd year, in university is a fantastic achievement altogether! I am really proud of my self and this experience and opportunity has given me more confidence in my growing skills, as a Graphic Designer.

I have now started a new project, which will be really good experience for me. I have been commissioned by my uncle, to design a logo, some stationary and build a website for his building services and home improvements business. Having gained some experience and knowledge on a similar project at university, as an assignment, I can now apply this knowledge in professional practice! I’m also hoping to use this as an example in my portfolio to attempt to attract the eye of an identity and branding company in Guildford.

I’ll be updating this blog as I develop this project further, as is also good practice.

UPDATES AGAIN!!!!

2014 has ended, and 2015 has started off with a bang…. well… I say a bang….

I have celebrated my best friends 20th, my boyfriends 21st and wow… I suppose christmas and new year too. I got some groovy gifts, as per usual!

I have been tremendously busy. My last unit, Screen Design: Information Design was really stressful. I haven’t had a chance to upload the screen shots yet, but once I find them again I will upload for the world to see (I am proud of it, regardless of the bugs in the code).

I have also started a new project, Ethical Design which involves me choosing my own field of study based around a concern or issue that could be fixed or have more awareness. BUT for Tuesday I have had to make a postcard based around my proposal.

This is my design: I based it around the PUFFIN and PENGUIN books. I kept it simple and used a grid system on the main text, on the back (yes it is double sided).

So, I have done a survey and hopefully that will give me some more ideas to work with. Busy times, but I am getting there. Nothing like learning and doing something I am passionate about.
